Breaking infertility stigma: “It’ll happen when it’s supposed to.”
First, let me say that I’m a believer. I believe in asking God for guidance and strength and peace and opportunities that can change the course of one’s life. However, asking God to pick up your fork and feed you instead of doing it yourself will surely result in death by starvation. God isn’t a wishing well. Bad things happen to good people. We have free will and the art of medicine for a reason. Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system. Why is treatment for infertility so stigmatized?
Why does everyone believe in God’s will when it comes to medical treatment for starting a family, but not other medical conditions? Because when I decided to start a family, it didn’t happen because it’s not my time, right? But for 90% of the population, it just happens to be God’s will that they have a family when they want to?! Does that include those who abuse/abandon/murder their children, or no?
We have a 4% chance of conceiving without treatment and a 70% chance with treatment. If I was diagnosed with cancer with a 4% chance of living without treatment and a 70% chance with treatment should I leave it up to God’s timing?
God gave us common sense, free will, and medical treatment for a reason.
I’m so fucking tired of hearing, “it’ll happen when it’s supposed to.” That’s called magical thinking....not based in reality nor on factual information.
