it’s a myth. the original idea was that after eating a lot of your blood was diverted towards your stomach/gut and away from your arms and legs, so essentially you’d have an increased risk of drowning. 
i think the most that will happen if you each a meal and then swim you’ll either feel sick or get cramps. but i personally have never had cramps that have completely stopped my ability to get back to shallower waters 🤷‍♀️
