You can always get them to pay you “rent” whatever small amount that will be. Save it up for them in an account and give it to them once they move out or if they need it for school.

I always worked as a teen during the summer and that money was always mine. My parents paid for everything until I turned 18 as my “job” was to focus on school and the summer I worked and then used that money however I wanted/used when I went to college.

Once I got a job at 17, my parents didn't really "charge" me anything, but I was expected to pay my own car insurance and buy my own gas. But I really don't think it's a bad thing to have them take responsibility for a phone bill or something like that. Things that aren't really necessities. And I wouldn't ask for a large amount. I think $25 is good. My insurance was $20 and then I bought my own gas. It really helped me learn to save and set money aside for bills.

I tried to help my parents pay my car insurance and they told me to keep my money and save some for college. I think it depends on your situation and the teenager. If we were in school, they never asked us to help pay for anything but once we were done and in stable jobs, they asked for a little bit. I got married the summer a graduated college so they never asked me. My brother didn’t go to college and would have lived there forever if it was up to him (he got his gf pregnant and had to grow up a little quicker than realized so he did eventually move into his own house) so my parents did ask him to help with bills to make sure he was taking some responsibility.

The only thing I would make them pay is their own phone bill and something towards a car (either the car itself or insurance). Cell phones were definitely cheaper when I went to high school, but I paid for the phone and the bill and saved or spent the rest however I wanted. I think it taught valuable money management skills and I credit my financial situation today to the way my parents taught us about money.

Yes. My nephew is 16 and he’s been working odd jobs since he was around 14 and paying his phone bill then saving the rest. After he got his car last year he began paying for his own car insurance as well. It’s a great lesson.

When I lived with my parents I had to pay £160 in rent not sure how much that is in $. I didn’t have it saved up and given to me when I was 18,which of course would of helped me massively. However I did learn the value of money and to prioritise for when I moved out and rented my first apartment.

I got a job a month before I turned 15, the only thing I ever paid for was my car insurance. I still saved most of my money and that’s why my fiancé (who also saved the money he made from working 2 jobs) and I are 21 and 20 with a home, nice vehicles, and 10k in savings. 
If you do charge your teen for things like phone bills, etc., please hold onto it for them to use at a later time!

Their cell phone bill. I had to do that. I also saved up for my own car. After I started working, I also paid for my own clothes and food if I wanted to eat out with my friends. It’s teaches them to value hard work and money.
