What does this mean when you call someone?

When you call someone and there is no sound at all like there usually is then it finally goes to voicemail? 
I tried calling my bf 3 times. First two times it did that. And then the third one it just immediately went to voicemail.

His phones dead or your number is blocked

His phone was turned off or dead. Also when someone is on the other line it tends to do that as well. Who knows? Ask him tje next time you speak to him.

Everyone I've called has had this happen and idk why. I thought it was my phone being dumb but my fiance called someone and it did it too

My husbands phone does that when he doesn’t have service.

I found that when the person silences the call it stops ringing. They probably also hit ignore for it to go to voicemail
