Is it a legal system or justice system?

Multiple trigger warnings. 
I’m constantly seeing CHILDREN who are forced to have sex for money and live in slavery then murder their abducters to get free and they are looked at as serial killers. I don’t fucking understand it. I don’t believe in murder nor the death penalty, but if I wanna look at it from the view of a local sheriff, their deaths was a favor to the community. Less victims, less money wasted finding, charging, then housing them. WHY are these children being punished. 
Then I came across this case, where a mother was being abused and she didn’t realize the children was a victim too. She was SO CLOSE to being free from her abuser. She worked and saved money as everyone’s blase advice is when one is being abused and can’t get out. She wasn’t there. She didn’t know. She was WORKING. 
The child ended up in a body cast. The man served 2 years. The woman who “enabled child abuse” is serving 30.  
Its being featured on 60 minutes. 
 
Should a VICTIM receive 30 years while the person that nearly killed children serve 2 because she wasn’t aware her children were being abused while she was at work?

Is America far too gone to be reformed? 
What changes can us as citizens make?
How did we even fucking get here to begin with?

This is heartbreaking but damn is not even uncommon. Stories like this are rampant across America. Our legal system punishes the abused above the abuser. I think there is a current issue with judges who hear that the woman was abused during a custody battle automatically giving custody to the father. People who are abused are considered kidnapping if they leave the area to get domestic violence services with their kids and can be charged. It’s so sad to see. Like heart breaking. I work with survivors of sexual and domestic violence and the amount of calls I’ve gotten similar to this or people evading police because of this or because after police leave it becomes so much worse.

It's a "legal" system that was written by old white MEN, and enforced by men to protect men. 
We cant do any reform until those who's been in Congress and judicial system 10+years get TF out. We cant do any reform until ALL schools are properly funded, but too many people are too outraged over defunding police to be reallocated to schools soooo.....

Everything about America is completely fucking broken, and our justice system is definitely a huge part of it. 
Focusing on rehabilitation versus punishment would be a huge step in reforming the prison system. Particularly in cases like this, where this woman isn't a danger to society. She shouldn't be locked up for 30 years, thats insane and inhumane. She needs resources to transform her life, not be locked away like an animal.

Im confused. I would hve to hear more as I do not jump to conclusions and need to hear all the facts. But if he physical abused children and got 2 years and she got 30 thats crazy. But I dont think if her kid hd unexplained bruises and broken bones that she “didnt know” it was him.

I could have sworn I'd read a statistic somewhere that most women incarcerated for violent crimes are serving time for physically lashing out at abusers. Not just going out and committing a violent crime.

truly horrific. 
i don’t think people, especially the justice system, is educated enough on how deeply abuse impacts its victims. 
more often that not, victims cannot just leave their abusers at the drop of the hat. especially, when financial abuse is present and the victim has children to think about. 
a lot of abusers will successfully turn their victims previous support system against them. victims often feel like they have no where to go even if they want to leave, which is why building an exit to leave with some financial stability is so important. 
no abuser should get 2 years. they are a danger to society, and with how poor current prisons are and the fact that they don’t invest in rehabilitation, i don’t doubt that after his sentence he would be capable of abusing again. 
30 years for an abuse victim is gross. my mother was a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of my father. it took her years to build the courage to leave. 
because of this ruling, not only has a victim been punished harsher than the perpetrator, but a family has also been separated unnecessarily.
