Traveling with infant and toddler

We will be flying to Nashville for my sister’s wedding in October (hopefully!) with a 1 year old and a 3 year old. We plan to rent a van when we are there. We have never flown with them before! Any tips? Is it better to have the 1 year old on your lap vs his own seat?

Also, do you bring their car seats or use ones provided by the car rental company??
