When in labor, how did your water break?

Question

I follow an OB-GYN on Instagram and she's a great resource for all things labor and postpartum. She posted about the important of consent and bodily autonomy when you get admitted to the hospital in labor. There are so many comments about women having their water broken without even begin asked or explained the risks / reasoning (and we're not talking emergency situations here). Anyway it got me wondering how common it was!

Mine was broke by my labor nurse during a cervical check. She mentioned to me that when women are in labor as long as me and have cervical checks that sometimes they break on accident or they can manipulate their fingers a little bit to help purposely break it. She asked if I would be okay with my water breaking during a check and I said “yes please” 😂

With my first, I was being prepped for an emergency c-section and when the anesthesiologist was feeling my spine for my spinal, my water broke on it’s own. With my 2nd, water broke on its own getting out of bed but it wasn’t a lot so I thought I peed myself at first. With my 3rd, it didn’t break and I had a c-section so it was ruptured during surgery. I went into active labor with all of my babies before my c-sections and all 3 were emergency c-sections due to my babies being premature and how fast I labor (#1-45 mins, #2-2.5 hours, #3-1 hour). My best friend is an OB and she won’t break patients water unless absolutely necessary to avoid complications. We had an in-depth conversation about it when my SIL was induced and they broke her water super early on and the baby was still super high which makes doing that risky for cord prolapse.

I was induced with both babes. My June baby I had my water broken about 5 hours after induction. It wasn’t a great experience. 
I switched providers for my May Baby, they didn’t break my water until about an hour before he was born. It was a fantastic experience. I went with the Swedish Midwives for my second delivery, and I couldn’t imagine having a better experience in delivery. They explained that it was better to wait on the water breaking so as not to have the cord slip through while I was laboring.

My midwife broke mine as I was pushing. I had a really quick labor. Got to the hospital at 11:30pm and dilated 8, baby was born by 12:30am. I don't remember her asking but at that point baby's head was almost out so....

With all 3 of mine my water broke naturally. Baby 1 during labour in the birthing pool. Baby 2 as I got into bed which immediately started contractions. Baby 3 after 4 hours off mild contractions waters broke and she was born 20 minutes later x

With my first, my water broke on its own. With my second, my midwife broke it after telling me my waters were bulging and it was time to push.

We decided with our doctor after 24 hours  from the start of my induction to break my water. It really helped push labor on and got things moving a little more. They explained the risks well to us and we didn’t go over a certain amount of time, if I hadn’t given birth when I did I would have gotten a csection. I had to be induced for medical reasons.

I had a hard labor (so much pushing!) but I had great nurses and a great doctor. I kept having super long contractions and my sons heart rate kept fluctuating with the contractions so to get things rolling she broke my water. She told/asked me beforehand and was great with communicating what was happening as we went along.

They broke my water both times during scheduled inductions. They told me both times they were going to do it, but they didn't really ask? I honestly didn't know I had a choice 🤣
