Any tips on dressmaking?

So, the wedding dress I fell in love with and always wanted wasn't an A-line dress (like it was marked as) but instead a trumpet dress. I tried it on anyway (that's how I found out it wasn't a-line), because it was too beautiful not too, but I just wasn't comfortable in it in the slightest. I couldn't move in it properly at all, kept tripping over the bottom. I never went to my school prom, so I don't have any experience in formal dresses. On top of that, I noticed that I looked very "stiff" in floor length dresses, and I'm not really one to wear heels for the extra height.

So I decided "hey, why not make your own"... But I don't really know where to start. I know I'm aiming for knee length or longer. I did consider having a dipped hem... My plan is to draw up a few designs first, but when it comes to the actual dress making has anyone got advice on where to start, how to start, how to add lace? X
