Teething so early?!

Question

My little one is seven weeks old. He is excessively drooling and the past few days started on chewing his hands and rubbing his ears. He's also been fussier than usual, but we chalked that up to the sixth week growth spurt. A quick search in google says he is teething but isn't he too small for that just yet? Is anybody else's baby acting the same?

It’s very common for babies to do all of those things around that age. But it’s most likely not teething. Average babies begin teething around 4-6 months. Occasionally some teethe earlier, but it’s rare. Both of my first two didn’t get their first tooth until closer to 8-10 months. Around 6-8 weeks, babies’ salivary glands kick into gear, but they’re unable to swallow well unless eating - so they drool. A lot. They also typically find their hands about that time and chew and suck on them. Fussiness is also normal. So lots of moms think it’s teething, when it’s actually just development.

Babies that young drool a lot in general and chewing on their hands is a feeding cue. As far as fussiness, again when they are that young theres not really too much rhyme of reason as to why (assuming all the basic necessities are met) Could be a growth spirt, sleep regression, gas, etc. Its not impossible that they are teething this young but most likely another reason.
