I had a second degree tear. It healed great. My OB said that a 2nd degree is the most common tear but it depends on how long you have to push (I pushed for 2.5 hours) or how quickly the baby is delivered. You want your body to have time to stretch around the baby. I think tearing is better because there is no guarantee that you won’t also tear after an episiotomy.
