Lowering the crib mattress?

Hey ladies. first I know the Federal regulations but I also know the cribs on the market now start much higher than mine. we have an older, but safe, crib that only really has 2 mattress settings. Little man just started pulling up so of course I begin to wonder if I should drop the mattress. It would still be much easier to lay him down with it higher and even pulled up standing the top of the crib comes up to his forehead. Im torn because I know the newer cribs they say drop at pulling up but with the rails still being basically his height standing is he still alright keeping the higher height? If you can, show me your cribs and where you have your mattresses!
