Not walking yet?

Question

Anyone’s LO not walking independently yet? I mentioned it at the 15 mo appointment and the doctor seemed kinda worried and recommended early intervention if nothing changes in a week or 2. 
She walks a few steps and then goes back down to crawl. The most she’s walked is like 8 steps and then goes back down. Idk if it’s a case of she doesn’t know how to or doesn’t WANT to. 
I’m hoping she walks soon... 😕

Mine is not either. He can’t even take an actual step. It’s more of a shuffle step. The doctor said not to be alarmed right now and see if therapy helps. If not then they’ll do more testing.

I just asked my pediatrician a related question and she said 15-17 months is when some kids start walking and it's fine. Every kiddo is different. Just encourage her to walk when possible, even just holding one hand/your finger to give her that confidence, it may be self esteem and she just needs that boost to be sure she can go longer and help build that stamina. Crawling is probably easier for her, she's done it longer. I've eaten with a fork much more than I've attempted to eat with say chopsticks for example, so I'm going to fall back on what's comfortable for me if that makes sense.
That being said, I work with early intervention with 3-5 year olds. I'm not sure what the process is in your area exactly, but it should be free everywhere and you should be able to stop the process if you change your mind at any point. However, if you're even thinking about possibly calling, I would call now and get on the schedule. We had our girl evaluated for flat head early on and it took a few weeks to get everything lined up. We had to have a coordinator come for an interview first to explain things, and a 2nd meeting where schedules had to align for the coordinator, a developmental teacher, and a physical therapist in addition to us. So scheduling can be tricky and there are certain timelines that will need to be followed within once you make the request (ex- with the older kids we have 10 days to send a paper for parents to sign saying they want an evaluation, but then 60 whole calendar days to get it done AFTER we get the paper back. So even if it's returned right away, families could be looking at over 2 months just until their kid is even evaluated, then another month on top of that to begin getting direct help). I'm not sure what the timelines are for birth-3 services specifically as I don't specialize in that, but I just wanted to share this information so you know even a request made now doesn't mean you'd have services next week. Again, you can stop the process at any time and even if you do qualify for services after an evaluation, you can always decline too. But with everything going on and seeming uncertain with the virus happening (depending on your area of the country), it may be better to call sooner rather than later just to get on the schedule. I know right now our program is doing virtual evaluations through video and parent questionnaires basically so it may be different in your area.

My boy is doing the same thing and no one has told me to worry. Some babies just take longer for certain things but it’s all normal, I’m not worried about my son at all.

It is totally ok till 18 months for them to not walk independently. My neigbours LO started walking at 19 months because she had different ways to get to places som she just did not want to move forward on 2 feet. So dont worry.

My daughter does same thing. She pulls herself up and walks holding onto things but doesn’t walk independently. Don’t sweat it! They’ll get there soon!

And today—— we just up and started walking across the whole yard and living room like she was a pro! Went from maybe one step yesterday, to full on walking ! So it’ll happen when you least expect it!

Early intervention is great and free.  Our LO came at 34 weeks and has been in therapy since month 3.  It has helped us help her so much!   She went from not turning over to crushing her goals.

Personally I would not worry. The fact that she is able to stand up, take a couple of steps, and show she has balance means she is almost there! My son didn’t truly start walking until about three weeks ago. He’s 15 1/2 months. I would say it was about a month from the time that he took those first couple of steps in a row until he confidently started walking. She will be there in a couple of weeks.￼

Mine isn’t either- was told not to worry, just constantly encourage her. She just doesn’t want to- maybe she can’t, but will go down to crawl. Has taken a few steps but nothing major yet.
