If someone who plays a significant role in your child’s life was in prison would you take your child to visit?

Eg their father, grandparent etc.

Depends on what they went to prison for. 
Weed/petty theft? Sure. Rape/murder? Hell no.

What did they go to prison for?
Is the child even comfortable being there? Would the child be worse off if I prevented them from visiting them? 
I’d just do what I felt was the best and safest thing for my child.

Yes I would. I mean obviously, it definitely would depend on the crime committed, but if it’s someone important to my kid, why would I NOT take them? Visits are important to the well being of the inmate and to their loved ones.

For something like rape or cold blooded murder, no. Other things, yes.

Depends on how you feel about it. My dad has been in prison since I was 6 years old and my mom always gave us the option to go visit it not. I am not 29 with a son and I take him to go. I’ve gone for 23 years and I’ve never had issues during a visit it been scared or anything like that

I remember going to see my uncle in prison as a child (drug arrest). It didn’t have a negative effect on me and the guards even let us take a picture with him, which I still have. I would depending on the crime and the age of the child

Yes and I did. My fiance, my kids father, was sentenced to 1 year in State prison for a small amount of marijuana. Every other weekend we went and saw their Daddy. They had just turned 1 & 6. It was helpful that their visiting room had a play area with toys, books and a tv with cartoons. Also snack machines. They didnt have any negative effects from it.

I’m a prison nurse (have been for 7 years) and have seen a lot, know a lot, and have experienced a lot. My kids would 100% never go inside of a prison. I’ve responded to explosive fights in visitation. I’ve seen offenders attack their visitors over bad news or for no reason at all. I’ve responded to offenders trying to assault another offenders visitors to try to get back at them over something as simple as not paying them back a bag of chips from commissary. I’ve seen what happens on the inside (brutal physical and sexual assaults, riots, arguments, masturbating publicly towards staff, etc) and I would NEVER put my kids in a situation where that kind of stuff could happen around them. You literally never know what is going to pop off or what is going to set it off. It’s too risky. Period.

Depending who the person is in their life, what they are in prison for, my child's maturity/age/understanding of what has happened, and if my child wants to go into a prison to see this person

It’s a tough one.
Don’t know if I could answer until I was in that position and what the crime was.
My husband and I actually talked about this once, he said if he was ever in jail he wouldn’t want the kids to visit. 
He said he wouldn’t the kids to see him there.
