Does having a cervix check and being dilated really tell you anything?

I was supposed to get checked at 35 weeks but my ob was delivering another baby do it was cancelled. They're planning to check me next week at 37 weeks and I'm just wondering if the dilated number really means anything or just brush it off & not focus too much on that?

It doesn't really tell you anything! Unless you in active labor. You can walk around slightly dilated for weeks even months, and you can go from 1-10cm within hours. 
Here they test when your I'm active labor, of if medically necessary.

I was 1cm at my 37 week appt and 1
And a half at my 38 week. I was induced at 39 weeks and was at 2 cm

I’ve had 3 friends now who got checked and we’re 4 cm and 50-80% effaced... for 3-4 weeks 😩. (All 2nd babies). So it doesn’t really mean much because we can walk around like that for weeks. I think the opposite tells you more, like if your hard and closed then you probably have some time 🤷🏻‍♀️.
