Foreplay - optional or mandatory?

So, my bf and I are having some sex issues... We've been arguing recently over why we don't get along so well in bed, and I think I've reached my conclusion over our last talk, one where he specifically uttered the words "you do your own foreplay". I know, right? But give the man a break, i swear he's perfect for me in any other way.

And to be able to completely grasp the situation, I also want to add that he enjoys rough sex and that, APPARENTLY, I am the first woman he met that NEEDS foreplay.

I truly wish to hear what you ladies have to say. Is it that unusual to actually NEED foreplay (or else it hurts and it's not pleasant for anyone) ?
