Is a diaper pail necessary?

Debating if I should get a diaper pail/genie. Do they really work with smell? I hate going outside every time the baby has a stinky diaper.

Why is everyone always so hung up on not getting diaper pails? It’s not like they cost hundreds of dollars and they keep the smell in until you have to change the bag. I use a pail for dirty diapers and a trash can for wet diapers. 
Either get one, suck up the smell from a regular trash can, or take the dirty diaper out each time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 
I have the Prince Lionheart Twist’R pail. It takes special bags and it’s priced at $100, but I got two of them on sale for like $40-$50. The company even sent me a new pedal when mine cracked (after almost a year of use).

I've read a lot of mixed reviews. Some people said just a good airtight trash can w/ lid is better. We are torn too

I got one and we used it for a year, hated it but thought it was necessary, until we got so fed up that we trashed it and never used it again. The special bags are expensive, a pain to deal with, and by the time you pull out the extra plastic to tie it properly, your nose is full of stink and you wasted more plastic than you'd like you admit it is saving you. 
New method: we have a small trash can next to where we change. We reuse store bags, or buy small bathroom baggies. Put diapers in it. When there's a poopy diaper or its getting full or stinky, we tie it and throw it in our main trash. It rarely smells up that trash, but if it does, it's usually time to take the trash out anyway. 
We did this with 3 kids vs the diaper pail with 1 kid, and it's much easier and actually less gross than the diaper pail sausage of poo.

You could wrap each diaper in a bag or get a regular trash can with a cover (airtight). You know the big buckets cat litter comes in? We use one of those for stinky bathroom trash. The lid fits on tight 👍 and free!
