Will iron pills help my period?

I went to the doctor because I have heavy, irregular periods and thought I had PCOS but i don’t. Everything is normal with me except I am anemic and my doctor prescribed me to take over the counter iron pills which i do now and have been for about a week. Will these iron pills make my period lighter and more regular?

More regular? No, the iron is for the anemia. 
I too sometimes have very heavy painful periods and I have found that staying active or even going on walks helps a lot with that. Aside from that I also take potassium and magnesium supplements (around my period time). 
To get your period to be regular you would need to get on some type of hormonal birth control

They help build back red blood cells which you lost due to heavy periods
Your periods will still be heavy
