Dropping?

What’s the deal with dropping? I’m a ftm and have no clue what it truly means. I get the baby has to get ready and goes down but does dropping mean you’re about to go into labor? Or it’s soon? Or is it just a thing that happens? Do you have to drop to go into labor?

No, women on here seem to think they drop all the time and it’s actually just the baby is bigger and their stomachs can’t hold it anymore 
My son didn’t “drop” until I was in active labour after 12 hours of labour. 
It’s not a requirement and not an indication of anything. 
If I showed you a pic of a my bump over the last 4 weeks every other week my belly looks like it’s “dropped” but it’s not my baby is completely breach lol

Descending lower into your pelvis to get ready for delivery. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll deliver shortly after baby “drops,” but you may feel like you can breathe a little better, BUT you’ll probably waddle more and feel more pelvic and hip pain. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t recall ever dropping with my son. He was always sitting so low to begin with. This one is also head down, low, and ready to go. Doesn’t mean labor is near.

I never dropped with my daughter. My doctor said it’s probably just because I have a long torso and I may never “drop.” So no, you don’t have to drop to go into labor.

Just means baby has moved head down into pelvic area. Most often people who say that to you are implying “anyway now” but I didn’t really drop with any of my first four kids until well I go labor. This time baby moves his head into position and I can see a drastic difference in my body, then he wiggles back up the cycle continues. 🤷🏻‍♀️ easier to breath when he does, but also more pelvic pressure and strain on lower regions.

It doesn’t really mean anything, like baby can drop at 34 weeks and you still deliver at 42 weeks. Also, they can drop in and out of your pelvis, so just cause they drop doesn’t mean they’ll stay there. It’s kind of like a trade off too, once they drop they’re out of your lungs so you may breath easier but then they’re sitting so heavy on your cervix so you trade one discomfort for another. And sometimes it doesn’t even happen. I delivered at 35 weeks and I have photos from the week before, the day before, and right when we left for the hospital and I never even dropped.
