Is this a reasonable request?
So I’m going to keep this brief as possible.
Fiancé works for and basically runs family business. It’s owned by his grandfather. He basically keeps the place afloat, especially since COVID. Without him, I imagine the place going to shit.
He’s underpaid like crazy for starters. He is the only staff member who doesn’t get paid overtime until he spoke up about it literally a week ago, and he was always the one made to work the overtime. Taking the piss a little since he’s the only not paid overtime.
Since reopening, they’ve made him work 6 sometimes 7 days a week, sometimes in the 60-70 hour a week range. Starting work at 7 and not getting home til 7 sometimes later. Bearing in mind they weren’t paying him for this.
So they usually close every July for two weeks, always have. Well not this year. And he deserves a break. His grandfather doesn’t really have a paternal relationship with my fiancé, its just a professional working relationship.
Well I’m due with our 2nd late November. He would be entitled to 2 weeks paternity. and In light of this, we both feel it’s not unreasonable to request an extra week to make up for the holidays he SHOULD have had in July. He’s actually owed two weeks, but is only wanting to ask for one week extra on top of his two week paternity, which would equal 3 weeks off in total.
Is this a fair request? I personally think he should go much further, demanding to be backdated over time pay, a pay rise etc. But this is all he is going to request.
His grandfather has a habit of agreeing to things like this in advance, then throwing it back at him last minute.
