Should you know the last name of a person you’re meeting up with from a dating app?

This came up because I asked for a guy on a dating app’s last name and he got weird about it then refused to give it to me. I’ve always been told as a woman to text a friend the guy’s name and place we’re meeting up before the date for safety reasons. Of course I also do a quick social media search to make sure there isn’t anything questionable there. I mentioned this in a group chat and my friends are divided. Some think it’s a red flag he won’t give his last name since it’s such a public thing and at least adds one layer of comfort (even though it doesn’t completely ensure my safety) while the other side is totally content going on a date only having been told the guys first name. Some go as far as to say it’s weird that I want to know a guy’s last name before the third date. Thoughts?
