Pajamas for newborn?

I’m a FTM due in August. I’m organizing all the babies clothes and realize we only have 1 zipper footie PJ. Do you usually dress baby in PJ then swaddle or do I put baby in a onesie then swaddle? Want to be prepared :)

I love footie pajamas! But get the ones with the zippers. There’s a special place in hell for Whoever decided buttons and snaps were a good idea... lol my babies liked to have footies and a swaddle. Except for my second. He was so hot natured that he was only comfortable if he was in a diaper only and then a swaddle. Any other layer he would not tolerate. He spent most of his at home time in a diaper. They’re all so different. Get a couple and see what your baby likes and what works for you.

My baby never stayed swaddled so he lived in the footed pjs. Like for months that’s all he wore. Granted my first was born in January, so it was more fitting for the climate

I would not recommend footed pj for a newborn. That’s a pain to change in the middle of the night. In the beginning they need to be changed multiple times throughout the night. 
I’d say a onesie and swaddle. 
If it’s colder in your home, then a night gown and swaddle. 
Night gowns are the best! They sell ones that have cuffs at the end so if they get out of a swaddle or don’t like to be swaddled then they won’t scratch themselves. And they’re easy for diaper changes. We have about 6 of them.

I love my zipper footie pjs. They have been a staple with onesies for all my kids.  They would wear them by themselves, or I would put a jammie under a dress for long sleeves and instant leggings/socks as a cute outfit. I intend to continue this tradition for wintertime with overalls for this little guy. But that was mostly for my fall early spring babies. That said, August is really warm, so I might not use them as much this time around for the first few months. unless he is like his sisters and hates being swaddled. Then he might get a jammie to sleep in. A gown can also work, though for some reason I never took to them.

It’s hard to know what you will like. I loved footed pjs with zippers, my daughter practically lived in them. That and onesies if it was warmer. I live in FL so it was hot when i had her in Sep but then cooled off. I’m all for one article of clothing only, but to sleep she also (or sometimes only) had her snoo sack (like a swaddle).

My first hated to be swaddled. I used a lot of the footed pajamas for her. I’m getting more of that this time than actual outfits.

Babies don’t control their heat well so a good rule of thumb is 1 more layer than you. So if you’re sleeping in shorts and a tee, then they’ll be okay in a sleeper. If your AC is blaring and your in pants, then they can do a sleeper and swaddle. All babies are different and you’ll figure it out fast if you have a warm or cool baby. My daughter LOVED being warm, so we did do footed sleeper with swaddle.
Also highly recommend the zipper sleepers, and some brands (Cloud Island from Target) advertise reverse zippers so you unzip from the feet which is awesome cause you dont have to completely undress them to change diapers.
