It's a fun idea for sure, but I do not think mermaids exist. While it's possible that if evolution had happened differently, an early primate could have evolved to become a vaguely humanoid aquatic creature, they wouldn't remotely resemble what we see as mermaids. There's also no evidence for such a thing occurring. While much of the ocean is unexplored, an aquatic primate likely wouldn't be found far from land and the evidence of them would've been discovered by now, even if only in the belly of a bigger and deadlier ocean predator. 
The myth of mermaids stem from tales crafted by early sailors who spent an extensive amount of time at sea who were bored out of their minds, lonely, often delirious, and regularly saw sea creatures that were yet to be classified. These tales became a part of the mythology of many cultures and were further spurred on by people who used the corpses of monkeys and fish to create oddities that they could then market and sell to collectors or sideshows as "mermaids". The most famous of these being the Fiji mermaid, which was this terrifying hoax created by sailors that eventually ended up displayed by P. T. Barnum. It looked something like this:

My 9 year old daughter wants to go to Hawaii to do things you can only do in Hawaii. When I asked what things, she replied, “Pick coconuts and see mermaids.”
I’m not sure if she really believes in mermaids, but I don’t have any reason to tell her otherwise.
