Would you be upset?

How would you feel if your family members took your 12 year old out shooting (guns) without asking you first? He is at their house for a week visiting.

If you trust them to take care of your child, then why wouldn’t you trust them to keep your child safe. And more importantly to learn gun safety at the age is so great. What a great experience.

Depending on who it was taking him. My son has his own .22 rifle that he uses for squirrel hunting. His father takes him out shooting often as well as myself and my SO take my son out shooting. If it was my dad that took him without asking, I’d be ok with it because my dad shoots also. If it were my mother or a family member that aren’t familiar with guns and gun safety, I’d be upset because they could put him in harms way. My son is also 12.

I would personally be okay with it. But I have been shooting guns myself since I was 4 or 5. It has been a great experience for me because I learned how dangerous they can be, how you should use them properly to not get hurt or hurt someone else at a young age so I don’t play around with them. Then, if ever needed, I’d know how to use one in self defense, or to hunt for food.

I'm from the south. I have a carry permit. My whole family is into guns and most have a carry permit. I would definitely be pissed that they took my child out shooting without discussing it with me first. I would probably not allow my children to go over there without me anymore. And I would definitely be having a long conversation with them about respect and boundaries. I am so sorry. Good luck.

I’m not anti gun, I would just be more upset that they didn’t ask, I assume you as the parent would of wanted to be there to share that moment, or talk about it first! I would be a little mad

There is an inherent risk whenever guns are present. Endangering your son like that is so fucking out of line I can’t imagine how angry you must be. I wouldn’t teach someone else’s kid how to use a drill or even cook on a stove without their parents saying it’s okay. You did not sign off on the very possible harm or death that could have come to your son or by your son’s hand if something went wrong. He could’ve died. He could’ve shot someone. The kickback could’ve hurt him. That is so so far out of line.

Trusting someone and being comfortable about something is completely different. Just because your family thinks that taking a 12 year to shoot guns is ok doesn’t mean you do. How do you take someone else’s child to shoot guns without asking? I wouldn’t even take someone else child swimming without letting their parent know in advance. That’s the considerate thing to do. God forbid your child got injured or hurt in some way. Yeah I’d be pissed.
