Which birthing option was cheaper? US

What was cheaper for you? I’d love to hear cost comparisons from people who have birth in a hospital and then with a midwife, I’m trying to figure out which would be cheaper when it comes to what insurance covers.

I think you need to check with your specific insurance plan. It will be different for everyone.  I had a hospital birth and paid about $200 out of pocket total for the birth and recovery.  The rest was covered by my insurance

Hospital charged my insurance about 40k, needed pictocin after PROM at 39 weeks. I paid about 1.2k

For me midwife and my deductible was same. But for insurance I think hospital would be way more. They don’t cover a midwife

The cost for the hospital is what your deductible is or what's left of it and probably a second deductible for the baby( I would ask about that as well) The cost for a midwife and home birth is whatever they charge, I was quoted 4000 and 4500. Most home births/birthing centers are not covered by insurance but you should call and ask as that is changing...

I think it depends on your insurance. Hospitals are pretty much always the cheapest because instance covers then 99% of the time. 
Except for my case lol. 
I planned a birth center birth. We had to pay out of pocket with the hopes of getting SOME reimbursement after the birth. We paid like $7,200 total for the birth center. Of course I never went into labor naturally and had to go to a hospital to be induced at 42 weeks. Come to find out the hospital they work with went out of network with my insurance 2 month prior 🙄🙄 so I am now waiting for my $10,000 bill after the out of network coverage kicks in. 
Luckily we got reimbursed $5.5k for the birth center. 
We also met with home birth midwifes and it was about the same price as a birth center. 
We are in LA. 
I am hoping my hospital bill gets lost in cyber space. Giving birth in the US sucks. Our health care system is a joke 🙄🙄

I saw a midwife in a hospital setting until I became too high risk and had to transfer to a perinatologist. All of my prenatal care was covered 100%. The birth itself was around $100K charged to insurance (c-section, week long stay and lots of expensive meds), but we had already met our deductible for an earlier hospital stay (at 29 weeks), so we only had to pay for what was billed for our son (circumcision).

Out of pocket, a home birth is likely cheaper, but insurance won't cover it. Not sure if they cover birth centers either.

I gave birth at a hospital and I had a doula I had to pay for out of pocket which was fine. The hospital charged my insurance $21, 000 for a four day stay. I paid $4000 of that. I also needed pitocin and got the epidural
