I was very similar, and I would use techniques that would allow me to orgasm with hands - so I’d get really close with the water, and then use my fingers to go over the edge. 
I’d work on that over time and switch earlier and earlier. To be honest though, water was the fastest, “most efficient” way to orgasm for me.
Most recently I’ve discovered clit stimulators that use suction. Ho boy. I have to be careful to mix up what I use otherwise I’d get death grip with this toy so bad!
Sorry I’m digressing - best way to try and “wean” off one style of play is to get stimulated on it and then finish with another method of play. Expect it to take a bit longer and enjoy the process (if you get disappointed you may kill your mood)
