School or not?

I’m keeping this anonymous just because it’s a touchy subject for most. But I’m a SAHM to my 6 week old, 4 year old and 2 year old. My 4 year old was in pre k and She was really starting to become independent and making friends and loving school until COVID in March. Her going to school gave me such a nice little break during the day. They didn’t come out with guidelines yet but I think she would have to wear a mask in school. Idk if they’re doing full week, half days, 2-3 days a week. I won’t know until this week. 
Question is, would you send your child to school? I’m torn. A part of me wants to send her so she can be around other kids and play and it’ll give me a break during the day. (I feel selfish for even thinking that way) but you don’t know anything until you’re a SAHM yourself. The other part of me is saying no because god forbid she catches something and brings it home I would never forgive myself.

I have a 3rd grader and another going into preK. 
We have the option to do in person or virtual. We have chose to go virtual. 
 Here’s a response I had wrote to a friend:
(In response to being asked if I think school should be in person) honestly no I don’t. Let me give you my laundry list here and it may be sporadic but that’s what ya get when I have to keep coming back to typing a reply in between kido needs 😅
Going out in the community, adults can’t even follow guidelines, I’m not sure how we expect their kids to/kids in general. The behavior is certainly not being modeled for many of these kids. Additionally then, you’ve got all the individual that family was exposed to now exposed to all the individuals the other kid was exposed to. Kids aren’t known to be the little germ spreaders without good reason. They real are! 
That being said leads to my next reason. My daughter this last school year- even it being a shorten school year- was sick NONSTOP. To the point where her father and I actually tore apart her room looking for mold because she constantly had something respiratory going on. Influenza, RSV discovered on other occasions. Went to virtual schooling - which she had influenza a at the beginning of so actually had to miss the few last in person school days - and all the sudden... not sick. She hasn’t had one darn cold, sniffle, cough or anything. It’s a totally different kid health wise! Just crazy! And we were/are big on hand washing and keeping hands out of mouth already. And she was still coming home with all that nonstop. So if someone has COVID in her school, I’m 100% positive she’ll be bringing it home. 
Next issue, funding. These schools are not going to be equipped as they should to handle this. We’ve prioritized that testing should be done and all these distancing precautions should happen, that is of course, if the money is there. Baseball players- they’re going to get all that. They have the funding and that’s what’s been deemed safe. But, I guess what’s deemed safe changes when the funding isn’t there. Poor communities are going to be hit hard. They don’t have the funds already, they’re not going to b able to do smaller class sizes, provide masks, sanitize etc. it’s not going to happen. Half of me wonders if that’s realized and even more reason for these crooked politicians to say “send them back.” 
Politicians brings me to another reason- why are we listening to them about if school should or should not be going? Since when did someone, not in their specialty get a say? I don’t see epidemiologists on board with schools return. They’re who should be running this out break. It’s their area of expertise, not a politicians. 
Speaking of area of expertise, I get all these parents/guardians saying they’re not teachers. Duh. It is inconvenient as hell having kids home. I get it is disruptive to a families schedule and possibly hurting their wellbeing. But guess what? Wanting a baby sitter is not a logical reason to resume school... boom said it. 
Nor is “wanting your kid to be able to get back to normal.” If these schools enforce anything near what they need to to follow good guidelines to slow spread, school is going to look a lot different. There’s not going to be the normal buddy table in the classroom, normal recess play, normal lunch room shoulder to shoulder seating. I’m left to wonder if what will be enforced will be better for my child’s mental health than class over an iPad. And that’s certainly a topic no one seems to address in all this mess.

My daughter is 17 months and was in daycare until March when it shut down. I’m not putting either of them in daycare at this time. If they were school aged, I would be having them learn from home.  I’m due to go back to work Saturday and if my job doesn’t agree to just have me work me weekends (to avoid daycare), I plan on quitting.

I have a 6th, 4th and 1st header. We live in California where education is great and we have seen the plan for virtual planning. I have zero doubt that our teachers will do everything possible to keep them on track academically. Thankfully my kids have siblings so they aren’t missing out on “socialization” and to be honest, these months home have been wonderful for us as a family and they’ve grown to be truly best friends. We also have a pool, trampoline, outdoor activities like bikes, blades and hiking so we are fine to stay home. So for the health of my family, we are for sure virtual learning.

Where are you located? Are the numbers there high? 
I’d wait until the guidelines were released so you can take all those details into account. While in the past, children played and socialized in the lower grades, I’m thinking it will look VERY different in the fall. The CDC guidelines for schools are absurd. Kids sitting 6 feet apart (unlike the clusters in the past), no cafeteria, no gym, etc. They may not be missing out that much on the socialization aspect, because it will likely be severely limited 😔

I don’t have any older kids so this is easy for me to say (since i don’t actually know what it’s like to have a bored 4 year old in the house for 150+ days in a row...) but I’d keep them home until there’s a vaccine. 
What’s scary is what we don’t know. And we don’t know A LOT. 
Kids are less likely to die, but they can still get the virus and we don’t know if it comes back later (like the herpes virus or chicken pox / shingles). We don’t know the impact on the heart long term, but have seen people in their 20s suffering strokes and blood clots after recovering from covid. 
Personally I don’t want my child to be the test subject who has to wonder for the rest of her life. But I realize that not everyone can keep their kids home either for childcare reasons or mental health reasons. 
It’s tough and sucks that we’re in this situation. I’d say to asses the risks and discuss with your family and doctors. Make the decision with information and not based on what others are doing. Listen to the experts. If you don’t know who the experts are, ask your doctor “what are the experts saying?”

Dude im glad this is posted becasue I am on the fence. I have a 3rd grader this yr and my son will be going to pre k. They are both excited for school but since covid idk. They need to go to school to be social, especially my 4yr old. He needs it to helo him develop better but having a 5 almost 6w old at hime. Im not sure. I definitely dont mind homeschooling even tho I'd love that break school would give me. (Call me selfish but I need a break from the fighting between the 2)but our svhool doesn't do virtual for pre k. Only k-12 so I would have to come up with my own stuff and i sucj at that! 
But my kids need social interaction. Shit I need social interaction. We veen home since mid March and only gone out to the lake with coworkers. Stayed 6ft away as much as we could. 
But if I send the 4 and not the 8yr then I dont want her being mad he gets to go and she doesn't. But if either of them bring home covid then our whole house is screwed. But also, its a virus. And viruses dont just go away. So is this life from now until who kbows when? Will next school yr be the same? I already know my kids hate their masks PLUS we let the 8yr go to stem camp at school a few hrs a day for a week. They spent most of thentime outside and took precautions (alao limited amount of kids who could go) and they told her she didn't have to have her nose covered to help them breathe better if needed. Now she won't wear it over her nose which is just pointless!

I live in MN. I have a 5th, 3rd and 1st grader. My kids are struggling with the isolation. I am also a nurse. Once my 12 weeks is over my kids will have to go into daycare if school doesn’t restart. We did the best we could with distance learning but with both of us being essential workers our kids didn’t get the education they needed. We just filled out work sheets as best and fast as we could. No new learning just busy work. If able I plan to send my kids back. We are all going to have the potential of be exposed every day anyways.

We have had no cases in 31+ days but we are personally waiting to hear the school plan and see if our numbers rise again, I am a working mom and I work a lot of hours in the health care field and was taken off work one day before the pandemic was announced here due to pregnancy issues, that being said I have been a stay at home mom through covid and that’s no easy task! Home school we struggled with (she did amazing grade wise) but it was frustrating for her and I, and she has voiced she rather be at school with her teacher, so if they have a solid plan in place we will attempt to send her back and go from there! But every parent choice is different and all should be respected
