A few things I learned when becoming a mom and I thought I would share for any other new mamas out there! 🤍
1. It’s recommended not to put solids in your babies bottle... unless instructed to do so by a doctor for MEDICAL reasons only, because it is a major choking and safety hazard.
2. Rice cereal is no longer recommended as it has high levels of arsenic in it and increased risks to cancer, and has little to no nutritional value.
3. Baby should not start eating solids until they show signs of readiness such as sitting up unassisted and no longer have the tongue thrust reflux. This is usually after 6 months of age.
4. breastfeeding is recommended BUT is not meant for everyone so its okay to supplement or use formula if you have to.
5. breast milk is good for 24 hours after being thawed, and should only be heated twice before being thrown out.
6. Formula and breast milk are recommended to be used within 1 hour of heating, and should be thrown after if not refrigerated.
7. Formula should also only be heated twice before being thrown out.
8. Bed sharing is SAFE and recommended for breastfeeding mothers who follow the safe 7 (AAP).
9. Co sleeping (sleeping in same room as baby) is recommended for the first 6-12 months of babies life as SIDS is a common scare.
10. Vaccines are important and recommended for all children.
11. Letting your new baby “cry it out” to learn to sleep is not recommended and has been shown to lead to psychological issues later in life as well as not as good of a secure attachment relationship. (I’m referring to babies who are weeks or months old).
12. Babies usually take a bottle or nurse every 3-4 hours (sometimes more when cluster feeding) and drink about 2-6oz depending on their age.
13. Its okay to set baby down somewhere safe, and walk away and take a mental break for a few minutes.
14. It’s okay to feel like you are not doing a good job, but than to remind yourself you are a kick ass mom and you are doing amazing!
15. It’s okay to cry and ask for help, because PPD is real and nothing to be ashamed of.
16. Having your baby vaginal vs. cesarean doesn’t make you any less of a mother, both are equally badass. Same as using pain medication or not.
17. It’s recommended to rear face your child until at least the age of two as it is extremely safer.
18. Always remember we live and we learn and we are the best moms we can be and we should all be proud of that.
I’m sure there are more, but that’s all I have for now 🤍
