In your opinion, should there be legal ramifications for lying about your age on a dating app? For the situation I’m thinking about, it has to do specifically with minors, but there are also plenty of older people who pretend to be younger. Should there be legal penalties for this?
Here’s a situation I heard of around here. A guy I know met a girl on a dating app when he was 20, she claimed to be 19. They went out on a date and ended up having sex. Her dad found out, and it turns out she lied about her age and was only 15 I think. Her dad pressed charges against this guy, and he went to jail for a year and a half. He now is considered a sexual predator, had a hard time getting a job, and is now married but it’s definitely a challenge. The girl faced no consequences (legally) as she was a minor.
Do you think there should be legal consequences for people who lie about their age, or is that simply a risk people who use dating apps should be aware of? Is it their responsibility to ID dates/ask for proof of age? If someone is older and lies about being younger - even if it doesn’t cause any legal consequences- should their be punishments for that? Or only if it puts someone in legal jeopardy, like unknowingly hooking up with a minor?
If you do think that minors should be punished for lying about their age, what is a fit punishment as they aren’t actually adults and can’t be tried as adults (despite risking the other person’s reputation and life)?
