Would you tip?

Question

I had carpet installed on my stairs and I paid handsomely for it. I usually tip if I get work done to my house. At least 20 per person as a thank you. These people are self employed. I didn't tip the two guys today because they left my front door open for nearly 2 hours. That's the entire time it took them to do the job. They came in and then just left the front door wide open. It's not like they couldn't see the front door, the stairs are directly in front of the door.

So did they leave it open due to walking in and out a lot or working right up against the area? 
I'd tip because they still provided a service.

Why didn’t you close the door yourself?

I would have given the benefit of the doubt that they were hauling tools and carpet in and out of the house and left it open for convenience 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I still would have tipped. If you weren’t home it would be a different story.

I have next tipped for a service such as painting, carpet, etc. usually we get quotes and there is an agreed upon price beforehand

Maybe a stretch, but they may have left the door open for ventilation. 1. The smell of new carpet 2. COVID

Yeah I’d rip. As I said in a comment when we were chatting, I wouldn’t fail to tip someone simply because they didn’t do what I didn’t ask them to do. 
I did fail to tip a pizza guy once though... he literally hollered into the house, “What!? No tip!?” 😂 which was bold, but he was far TOO bold and that’s what lost him his tip in the first place. He spoke to me with a harsh tone that I forgave because he’s foreign (so maybe he just sounded harsh to my soft little American ears). But then he questioned my identity (he wanted proof that I was the one who ordered), asked if this was the right house multiple times, and actually stuck his body (foot, leg, full torso, head) into my boyfriend’s house and craned his neck looking around. Bro all I wanted was to surprise my man and his friends (who were in another room gaming) with some pizza before sending them on their merry ways when he finally handed me (okay I took) the boxes (that I’d already paid for with my card). He looked me dead in my eyes as I took them, taking a bit to loose his grip 🤦🏾‍♀️ I remarked that they weren’t hot (the pizza place was less then half a mile away).  That’s when he told me I almost didn’t get my pizza at all, because despite the fact that the pizza place is less than half a mile away apparently he couldn’t find us. I was like, “okay. I’ll take the receipt to sign,” zeroed out the tip and told him “that’s correct” and closed the door in his face. I still feel bad but I didn’t think he deserved the tip. And it was my money, I wasn’t giving it to someone who just disrespected me like that. 
Perhaps you felt disrespected as well. It was your money after all. I may not agree but it doesn’t exactly matter because it’s none of my business what you do with your own cash.

If you’re in the Southeast Or any area where pests can get in, I would assume they’d know to close the door. If they didn’t then, I would be in the same boat as you, upset why wouldn’t they close the door?

If it bothered you that much, you could have motioned to them, or literally put your hand over the phone/mic for the time it would have taken to say “can you close the door”. 
Definitely not something that warrants not tipping in my opinion. 🤷🏻‍♀️
