When to Tell Your Employer?

Hi Feb 2021 Mamas, I am 14+2 weeks today and we just told our immediately family. When is everyone informing their employers that you’re pregnant? This is my first live birth so I don’t know what’s considered “appropriate.” I live in the United States.

I told my manager the day after I found out. However, I work in a grocery store and didn’t want the possibility of having morning sickness and someone seeing me throw up and them think I’m sick with anything. I literally started the conversation with “so not that it’s any of your business but..” and then he asked if I was pregnant 🤣 he said congrats and let me know if you need anything. I could understand not wanting to tell until later on but I prefer to be upfront in case something happens.

With this pregnancy and my first  i wasn't  working. My third (pregnancy) i told really early on because i had a miscarriage between my first and my third and i was worried about it again. This time around im a stay  at home mom so i don't  need to worry about it

I told my boss at 12 weeks, unfortunately because I couldn’t hold it in and ended up puking in the trash can right next to him, so that was a fun time

I told mine at 5 weeks. I work in a lab and wanted to make sure nothing about my new duties would harm the baby.

I told my employer straight away as I was put on alternative duties due to covid. With my first pregnancy I told my immediate boss at around 8 weeks as I had to leave work a few times due to morning sickness.

I will probably tell after my 16 week appointment, which is when I told with my first. I've worked from home this entire job (3 years) so there's no real immediacy in telling other than just wanting to get that convo over with 😅

I am a teacher, and due to the safety concerns with Covid and teaching face to face, I told my employer after my first u/s at 8 weeks. I also wanted them to know because I could be puking in front of children. I’d also want my employer to know in case of a security emergency (God forbid). My last pregnancy I told them around 14 weeks.

I told early due to requesting COVID accommodations. During this time it’s important to stay safe and pregnancy gives you ADA rights at work.

So I had health issues early on so I told, but my manager so I didn’t need to tell until I was ready to apply for FMLA maternity leave.  Check your company policy.  They were giving me a hard time about dr appts so I had to start my FMLA early in order to be allowed to leave for medically necessary tests and appts.  A letter from my OB didn’t cut it.
