Which is better and why?

Question

So me and my husband were looking at homes to buy. Both of us grew up in one story homes but always wanted a two story home because they are beautiful but now I’m starting to feel a two story homes has a lot of negatives. 
Like 
-more dangerous in earthquakes and fires 
- kids, toddlers could fall down the stairs
- hard to get furniture up stairs
- stairs could become difficult in old age or injuries. 
Which is better and what are the pros and cons to each in your opinion?

I prefer multiple story homes because kids can be so insanely loud, and it's nice to have that floor as a buffer at times haha. The furniture part hasn't been too bad. And if we become less able in our older years then we'll just sell it and get a ranch styled home instead

Two story pros:
We have pets and our pets are only allowed on the first story, therefore our upstairs stays cleaner. 
Depending on where you live, it’s nice having the extra square footage by having a second story. One story houses in my neighborhood have smaller backyards since most of the lots are the same size. 
More privacy. Especially when my husband and I were both working from home, we were able to be in different stories 
Cons:
Stairs... mostly because I get lazy. Our laundry room is upstairs along with the bedrooms so that’s nice. The house I grew up in, we had to carry our laundry down 2 flights of stairs. Safety isn’t really a concern since you can install a baby gate at the bottom and top.

I'd prefer a 2 story if I have a choice. It would depend if you want this to be your last home or not, if your worried about stairs as an elderly person id go for a ranch style but if you think you'd like a 2 story while your family is living at home then downsize id do that

I absolutely love my house but if I could I would probably look more into a two story if we buy again.

I can more about how far I have to carry groceries from the car to the kitchen. Also how far laundry room and bedrooms are from each other.

Also, as a paramedic, two story homes complicate emergencies significantly. It can be a significant delay in care, and contribute to negative outcomes. I’ve had more than one person pass away, because of the time it took to get them transported.  There will also be times that people are forced to walk in the middle of an emergency, which can be painful or make their situation worse.

I’m from Florida, two story homes are more expensive to keep cool. It’s more to maintain.  It becomes an issue with age and mobility. I’ve seen many elderly people go to nursing homes ONLY because their homes have stairs. I will never own a two story house

Grew up in a 2 story house...never want a 2 story again. Personally for me I like ranch style homes better but that's just me. I hate hearing noises above me and would rather not have stairs. Whatever works for you though is what's best

We have a two story home with a finished basement. I LOVE it. My daughter is 10 and has yet to fall or harm herself on them. My son is 2.5 and mastered the stairs at 9 months and we haven't had any issues with him falling either yet (better chance of him hurting himself because he is wild and throws himself off everything). Our basement is the playroom and a lounge for the kids (right now just our daughter) when they have friends over/ sleepovers. The main floor is basic rooms, and our bedrooms are upstairs with a bathroom.  I love having that separation of living and sleeping area. The kids can be sleeping and we can still entertain friends and not worry about waking them. We dont have to have the kids clean their rooms before company comes over either. And so much more.

I’ve lived in both growing up. With kids I’ve only had one stories. When we we house hunting I wanted a playroom so I was thinks need a two story BUT we found a builder with a one story layout that had a playroom. Our hood one story, 2038 sqft with a separate dining room and my girls have a playroom in between their rooms! It’s perfect! I was worried about my youngest and stairs so I was soooo happy when I found this one story!
