Opinions on nipple shields?

In my house we very rarely use plastic products because of the hormones + carcinogens in them, but I have crazy senstive nipples and want to try and exclusively breast feed. I wish there was a non plastic nipple shield alternative, but is there anything else I can try to use or maybe just aid the sensitivity?

Have you breastfed before? I have really sensitive nipples to the point of pain, like telling partners, "They're for display purposes only!" about my nipples. For some reason, I was still able to breastfeed just fine with no gizmos or accessories. 
I don't have any recommendations but you could just try it, see how it goes, then introduce the shield if you really can't do it.

My mother told me that beginning two weeks before your due date you should “rough up” your nipples with a dry  washcloth 3 times a day to toughen them up and prepare for breastfeeding. Might be one of those older ideas (she did have me 40 years ago!) but it might be worth a try. I am doing it — figured it can’t do any real harm.

I would highly suggest trying to breastfeed without the shield first. They are wonderful when needed, but if baby can latch without one and you are feeling ok, I would say don't use one at all. The skin to skin contact helps your milk come in, babies transfer milk better without one and your body will produce antibodies if baby were to get sick but it's in response to the baby's saliva!
