PTSD is not an adjective

... and it isn’t stress you feel after a trauma related to that trauma.

It’s a debilitating mental disorder that literally disrupts your life, and causes you to process information differently because of a past trauma.

You do not have PTSD because something intense or even traumatic happened to you and you’re still upset. You do not have PTSD because you were reminded of your trauma and it made you sad or anxious or angry.

And you don’t have PTSD from that thing that happened to you just last fucking month.

.

Edit: yup I’m saying even if you have post traumatic stress, you don’t necessarily have post traumatic stress disorder. Yup I’m saying it needs to affect you for longer than a month...

To invalidate someone’s trauma I’d have to say “your trauma isn’t valid” and that’s not what I’m doing.

I’m saying “I have PTSD” is not a placeholder for “I have trauma-related stress” it’s like when people get really sad or disappointed and they say “yeah that shit depressed me” or “I’m so depressed today” smdh. It’s trivializing and that shit is annoying.

If it’s not DISRUPTING YOUR LIFE you don’t have PTSD.

And did I say disrupting your life every day? No. I said disrupting your life. Because that’s what a disorder is. Moreover... PTSD has to do with a certain type of trauma that exposes you (even if indirectly) to risk of injury or death. So I’ve got another one for you: you do not have PTSD because you are utterly devastated about being broken up with or cheated on after a 20 year relationship. Is it traumatic to go through that? Yes girl. Do I think you can still have post-traumatic stress related to it? Yes girl. But PTSD isn’t a hashtag 🤷🏾‍♀️

Obviously I’m not speaking about people who actually have PTSD, I’m speaking about people who use the term casually whether it relates to trauma or not and if you honestly have an issue with facts... that PTSD is a DISORDER, then you’ll just have to deal with it, personal delusions to the contrary and all.

PTSD is not a fucking fad. End of story.
