Is erecting monuments or statues dedicated to individual people an outdated practice?

Va

This is specifically related to statues and monuments on public property... not private property or cemetery statues...

With all of the controversy surrounding statues and monuments in the news.. specifically those with ties to racism or the confederacy.. what are your opinions on putting up NEW statues of people or monuments dedicated to people? What are the pros and cons in your mind?

The way I see it, PROs include being able to honor someone for their noteworthy actions or awards/honors received through a form of artwork (sculpture, etc) while also adding interest or beauty to a public space like a park, or giving people a place to go other then a cemetery to honor them.

The CONs could be potential controversy over who should be honored or if they are good enough of a person to be honored publicly, and then ultimately have a part of their history that is or becomes controversial in time, as well as the cost to properly maintain a monument or the cost to remove and replace it if it included someone’s image or a symbol that became problematic...

Would it be better to not put faces on them and have a more abstract way of honoring someone that could be re-named or repurposed if the original person was ever considered unworthy (example would be the way streets in towns are renamed for people... or on a larger scale, the Washington monument in DC).. is it better to not have monuments to individuals at all?
