Crib mattress

Question

Is there really a huge difference between crib mattresses? Should I pay big bucks for the name brand ones?

We bought a cheap one from Walmart and it has worn out before being used 2 years- the springs popped a hole in the outer cover and one sounds like it’s broken. Granted my boy jumps a lot in his crib, though. We chose to get the newton mattress, and while it’s pricey, we are already happy with our investment and we’ve only had it a couple months.

I did not go too expensive or cheap.  I wanted to make sure that it had firm side for infants and another softer side for toddlers.  My son will be 4 and the mattress is in great shape. This is a different model then the Sealy I have.  I would have purchased the coolsense one if I knew he would be such a hot sleeper. I seen ones with non water proof coverings.  Dont get that potty training will ruin that quick.

The most important thing to me is that it’s greenguard gold certified because I’m paranoid about any toxic materials used in my house, especially for my kids. We bought this mattress for my son 3 years ago and it’s still in absolute perfect condition (no sagging, no stains, no rips, etc). I originally bought it thinking Id just use it for my son, but since it’s still in perfect condition I plan to use it for baby #2. I keep a Tencel waterproof crib protector on it under the sheet to keep it clean, but other than that it’s been zero maintenance. I prefer foam because it’s so much lighter, which makes sheet changes an absolute breeze, but other moms prefer innerspring mattresses. Whatever you prefer is fine 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m a FTM so no experience yet, but I did lots of research on this. It’s a bit of a rabbit hole but long story short, mattress regulations in the US are a joke. This is the only one I felt safe with. I’d love for all of her products to be the safest but obviously it’s pricey. I figured this is where she’ll spend the majority of her time for the first few years so I do t mind spending an extra couple hundred dollars. If you feel like going down the rabbit hole lol research the New Zealand case study on SIDS and crib mattresses, along with what the so called “certified” statuses in the US actually mean.
