Can I take a bath?

Question

My OB had to do an episiotomy. So can I take a bath?? I asked my nurses before I left the hospital, one nurse said yes, the other said no :/

Sitz bath yes, soak in the tub no. As sucky as the answer is. Both when I gave birth naturally (tore pretty bad) and after my c-section I was told no bath until 4 weeks at least. 6 is preferable

I wouldn't. You have a cut and a big hole inside your uterus and it's not good if your water had bacteria in it and it got into you.

I think it’s more about the internal wound than the episiotomy. Your cervix is still open and the wound from your placenta is healing. My OB said no baths no swimming no sex until she cleared me at the 6 week pp appointment

I found out the hard way that you’re not supposed to bathe after giving birth even though they encourage it in the hospital.  I developed an infection at 5 weeks post partum which they suggested was from taking baths

I had a tear with 6 stitches, and Sitz baths helped me so much with recovery! However, there is a sweet spot. Soaking for too long (20 minutes or more) started feeling uncomfortable. 10-15 minutes in a wonderfully warm Sitz bath was fantastic for me.
