College visitors: should students get a say?

So idk if everyone knows who Kaitlyn Bennet is?

Poop girl
Lots of names tbh
Well she likes to visit schools for her blog or media project or tbh whatever it is she does and more often than not she gets protests while she is there
Pre pandemic she visited U of Ohio and was yelled at off of campus and said she was going to hold a open carry rally at the school which is not school policy so that didn’t happen
She recently visited another college during covid( like within the last week or two) without a mask in a college and was yelled at again 
My question is this
Colleges often have people coming to speak at the school who are controversial but they are invited by the college
Colleges also can have people come to the college who cause a lot of controversy
Should students get a say on who comes and is a presence on their campus?
Does either situation change your answer?
Are some people okay to visit while others aren’t?
My thoughts are, especially if you’re incredibly controversial and you aren’t following school guidelines of mask wearing, you shouldn’t be allowed on campus and should be seen as trespassing. I think students should get a say especially since this is the place they call home and pay money to attend whereas this person is a visitor.

I like to see speech on college campuses as open as possible so students are exposed to a broad spectrum of ideas. Even knobs like gun girl. I can’t call for speakers I like who are radical and not say others shouldn’t be allowed. Students should also be encouraged to peacefully protest against content they find objectionable instead. Campuses are usually safe places to learn about and engage in that type of community organizing. 
However, exceptions would be things like representatives from identified hate groups, those who advocate against the public safety (like the anti-maskers), and those who can’t follow basic campus and community guidelines being banned and removed.

Colleges have been allowing controversial speakers for decades because it encourages students to examine their beliefs and see other perspectives and arguments. They actually do serve a purpose. Students need to learn how to cope with exposure to differing view points and how to interact civilly with people who are different from them.

My college had very controversial speakers come from all sides on many topics and specialities. But they were always invited. Part if college should be the expansion if your world view and the learned ability to discuss without fighting. Having someone come when campus security knows and can prepare is different than someone showing up just to make a scene or just to be there and causing chaos that was unexpected. We as students can plan speakers but they had to be approved by dept head and the dean. As long as there was a place to hold it and no conflicting events it was almost always approved. So we had a say on who came and if we didn't want to see someone we just didn't go. I have heard the gun girl has just shown up and as a student that would have been annoying. When she is out of the spotlight she does something to cause issue to get attention again. I would be bothered if she used my school as a way to get another 15 min if fame and caused issues/potential danger doing it. If you aren't invited or a student there why go just to start shit for attention. Thankfully my college was private and she would have been escorted off campus but my viewpoints are for public or private schools.

I think it’d be great for students to get a say but it might be difficult to carry that out in practice. It would be difficult and time consuming to get every student to vote on potential speakers. But I definitely think if the students started a petition or protested a speaker the school should consider not having that speaker. 
At my brother’s college graduation the very liberal school got a very conservative speaker and the students booed him off stage before his speech even began.

If you’re bringing violence then go away. Aside from that, students do have a say. So not really sure if maybe you didn’t know that?? But students invite speakers etc all the time.

If the person coming on campus gets permission or is invited, and they follow the guidelines of wearing a mask and whatever else, then that’s perfectly fine. If the students were given the choice, this would give the more left leaning speakers the limelight. Whether controversial or not, both sides deserve the chance to hold those vlogs and speaking engagements. Seeing as how most universities lean liberally, allowing a few conservatives to mix it up is only fair. It doesn’t matter if you agree with the speaker or not. If you disagree then don’t attend or have a mature conversation with that person. Kaitlin Bennett specifically doesn’t always approach topics in a mature and loving manner. She’s honestly more about the shock factor. If she were more polite about things, it honestly wouldn’t change people’s views of her though, and that’s simply because she’s very republican.

Unfortunately, most colleges have to allow ~almost~ anyone to speak at a designated spot. They just have to do some paperwork first and whatnot. It’s kind of a free speech thing. Pro-lifers come to my college all the time but it’s at a designated time and spot.

Many colleges have a designated spot on campus that is called the free speech area. It is the only spot on campus anyone can set up to talk about/preach whatever they choose. We had one at Texas Tech and would frequently get religious but jobs yelling about everyone going to hell. It taught students to argue back appropriately or ignore them. The only time a group was police escorted off campus was when a religious group took it to far and began verbally assaulting women who were walking by, calling them sluts/whores and commenting on the way they dressed and telling them they are going to hell for seeking an education. So it turned more into harassment than free speech/expression.
