Why is everyone talking about dilation?

Can u have no contraction with dilation? I am curious to know if im alrewdy dilating. Feel pain at the vagina area sometimes.

i haven’t had any consistent or painful contractions at all, but on Thursday i was told i was 1-2 cm dilated and 75% effaced. all i’ve really felt is some vaginal/pelvic pressure and period-like cramps at times. today i had my bloody show but still no painful for consistent contractions. you can definitely have cervical progression without contracting!

I have had some pretty intense braxton hicks , and still closed up tight. We only really checked at our appointment because she was trying to determine if he was head down. However I can now have weekly checks if wanted

It’s really not important unless you’re in active labour. 
I’ve been 5cm dialated without feeling a thing. 
It seems in the US the doctors do lots of checks but in Canada - I’ve never been checked for dialation except at the hospital when in active labour.

I've had minor contractions for almost 3 weeks now, but my doctor won't check me till my 40 week appointment, unless they get even worse i can request a check at 38 weeks. 
But I have no clue if I'm Dilated or not!

You should probably ask your doctor to check you at your upcoming appt. You can have pain and not be dilated at all or you could be 🙂
