Dressing baby for nighttime

Amanda

I’m a FTM and worry about dressing our newborn appropriately for sleep. He was a preemie born at 36w4d. He is now 12 days old and surpassed his birth weight now weighing 5 lb 8 oz so he’s a little guy. The weather is changing in northeast PA and it’s getting into the 40s at night now. Our room temp is usually 68-69F at night. We had been dressing our son in a long sleeve onesie and halo sleep sack at night but lately he has been fussy and waking a lot and I am afraid he may be too cold. Based on my temps, does he need more? I am terrified of overheating but also want him comfortable to sleep soundly through the night. I am such a worrier and constantly reading about SIDs isn’t helping.

Maybe try just adding a hat and mits for his hands and see how that goes. The rule of thumb is one extra layer than you feel that you need

We have been doing a footed pajama and a Muslin swaddle blanket .. our room has been between 67 and 70 at night ( we are in MA ) My girl was born at 37+3 and is now 6lb7oz at 1 month old .. she seems fine with the footie and blanket. Once it gets colder I will switch to the warmer sleep sacks with her footie I think. On warmer nights we do a long sleeve onesie with socks and swaddle her. Rule of thumb is 1 more layer than you need to be comfortable. So your PJs plus your blanket and then add a layer for them.

Hard help a lot to keep someone warm - no matter the size! Adding a hat will help hold in more heat.

We are in MN and we do a long sleeve sleeper underneath a fleece swaddle. House temp is 69-70 degrees at night.

Really I think it depends on the baby. My first son always got hot. He couldn’t wear any of the fleece pajamas because he’s overheat. So he wore long sleeve cotton jammies and a swaddle. This baby tends to stay cold. He is sleeping in fleece jammies and swaddled and some nights when I get him for feeds he still seems a bit chilly. Have you tried the warmer jammies? I also second putting a hat on him. You lose a lot of heat through hands feet and head so make sure those are all warm and covered.

It sounds like he would have enough clothing on, is there any way that it could be something else waking him rather than temp? Especially being that little, I wonder if it could be digestion related since they're usually so underdeveloped.
