Are crib mobiles really necessary?

Question

I know most moms always buy crib mobiles for their babies, but I’d like to know the whole purpose for them? Is it to soothe them? My son never has trouble napping or falling asleep and I’m afraid that they would be a useless distraction. Thoughts?

I used ours when I needed to set him down for a few minutes and give him a distraction like when I was putting his clothes away or something. Never used it for sleeping though

I bought one but it was absolutely pointless. Did not soothe my baby at all. It played for 20 minutes then stopped and right when the music stopped he would wake up. That’s when I bought a sound machine. I’m a new mom and didn’t know all of the stuff I know now when it comes to baby sleep. The sound machine is AMAZING. He sleeps with it on every nap and the whole night he sleeps. My baby boy is almost 6 months

Thanks so much everyone for this helpful insight :) I am SOOO lucky for Miles always sleeps 8-9 hrs straight. Doesn’t need books, sounds or music he just naturally falls asleep. I was the same as a baby so it must be hereditary 🙏🏻✌🏻

I used it for the changing table because it helped distract baby during diaper changes and he liked to reach for it

My oldest son didnt have one. My second son did. And it really helped w him. If I needed to clean I could lay him in his crib and turn it on and he would just watch it. Seemed to soothe him and he seemed to enjoy it. Also it helps with the brain development and  sensory

I found it to be a waste of space..it always got in the way

I never used one. I do have a sound machine that has a projector, but I almost never turn it on.
