Is it legal to kick someone out of an apartment and they are on the lease and to expect them to pay rent even though they can’t live there anymore?

If they are still on the lease, they have the obligation to make sure rent is paid. If you want them to leave, you’d need to have them removed from the lease. If you don’t, they can come and go as they please and have control over the lease. You’re better off to remove them and pay rent yourself. I mean if you kick them out and say, change the locks, they can request a new key because they are a lease holder.

Yes and no. If you’re both on the lease, they can’t kick you out. They can leave and have themselves removed from the lease, or provide proof as to why you are a bad tenant and present it to the landlord and ask them to evict you. But if you are unofficially kicked out but still are on the lease, than yes, both persons are required to still cover the lease. If you don’t, likely the other person will as it reflects badly either way (as in, they can’t just say “well my half is paid” bc that’s not how it works) but it’s not a situation you want to be in. Talk to the landlord and have yourself removed from the lease, or tell the other person to leave and remove them from the lease.
