How do you do thanksgiving??

Obviously covid changes things this year, but how do you normally celebrate? I just found out that some people pay to attend a family thanksgiving dinner, to pay for their food and such. We normally don’t. We all just bring a dish (potluck) and call it even. Usually, the host ends up making a couple more dishes, like salad and dinner rolls, and getting plates and napkins and such.

Why would anyone pay to attend a family gathering or Friendsgiving? That’s so bizarre 😳 I never expect anyone to pay when they come eat at my house.

Paying to attend a family meal is ... odd to me. I do know one person however who kinda does though and it makes sense in her circumstances. A family friend who is in a small apartment and works 80-90 hour weeks but makes much much more then her mother who still lives in the family home but is fast approaching retirement. Her mother hosts for all her kids/their families and generally everyone brings a side dish or 2, friend doesn’t have the time/space to cook a big dish for 12 plus people, barely gets Thanksgiving off. So she always buys the turkey, drinks, rolls, etc that her mother would normally be buying as the host. Basically, her mom hosts and cooks, and friend’s contribution is purchasing everything her mom needs to do this since her mom’s budget is more limited. I personally would not attend a family meal with a ticket price, but if it works for someone else, good for them?

I can understand how a host would want people to pay, but a way of "paying" is just to bring a dish to pass. My mom gets tired of hosting every year, but her house is the largest to host people. So we just all bring a dish to pass to ease the burden, and chip in with clean up. I don't think it's right anyways for the host to provide everything and everyone else just consumes.

We usually potluck and no one pays. My husbands uncle likes organic free range turkey, literally will pay like a ridiculous amount. If i had to pay I’d just stay home because that’s rude imo

I grew up near almost all my cousins. My dad has 5 siblings and 4 lived very close to us. Whoever hosted always made the turkey, the potatoes, and the gravy. Everyone who came brought a side or a dessert and helped clean up. Once myself and my cousins became adults we started bringing sides and desserts as well.

Shit, did poll before reading. I put we pay as in we pay for all the food that we're serving 🤦‍♀️ a pot luck would be great, but my mother in law is an AWFUL cook, and my parents live 5 hours away so it's not as easy for them to haul something along. So you learn to do a lot of prep work before the day of to make everything going as smoothly as possible

My grandma does it all normally. There was a year she was sick and then this year she’ll be skipping the festivities, so instead my mom hosts and does the turkey while my sisters and I (there are 5 of us) bring the rest of the food.

We’re doing what we normally do! 🤷🏽‍♀️ My husband makes the turkey, I make a few sides and a dessert, and my mom usually makes some sides too.
