Peroxide to kill germs?

I've been having a hard time finding disinfectant cleaning products. I had a nurse friend tell me that hydrogen peroxide kills germs, cold, flu and stomach virus germs. And that I could spray surfaces down with it to kill germs. Even can soak jewelry in it to kill germs. Anyone heard this before? She said they use it in the hospital when they run low on cleaning supplies.
