So I asked for a raise...

Sara

I asked to have a meeting about my salary and it was arranged with the person at my company who gives the final go / no go. I came prepared with a lot of arguments, and he agreed based on my arguments I totally deserved a raise, but when he asked my current salary he said he couldn’t give me one because they’re in the process of aligning salaries of people with similar experience and I was already pretty high. I said it’s the salary I was hired on and since I’ve been at the company I’ve more than proved myself which he agreed with because he had accepted all my arguments, but he still couldn’t give me anything and blamed the person hiring me for not having a clear salary strategy at the time.

How would you feel about this reasoning? Isn’t the whole point of a salary that it should be based on merit rather than years of experience?

It’s also made me feel really undervalued, but since I’m 12 weeks pregnant I feel stuck there for at least another year or two (where I’m from there’s a scheme supporting parents that want to work part time but to apply you have to be at your current employer for at least a year).
