How far back do babies remember??

I have a weird question. I have a 17 month old son, who we started casually teaching a few signs here and there when he started solid foods at 6 months old. It was mainly the signs for eat, all done, and more. We got out of the habit when he was around 10 months old, and honestly we weren’t even consistent with it at all. All day today he has been making the sign for “more” when he wants more to eat or drink. I called my mom and asked if she was still using the signs with him, because when she saw that we were doing it when he was younger, she did it with him too during the times that she watched him. She told me that she hadn’t done that with him in a really long time either, but she thought that we were still doing it because the last time she had him he did it for her too! There is nowhere else that he could’ve learned that besides my mom or myself.

How far back do babies remember things?? I feel like that is so long ago and it is so weird that he just started doing it completely out of the blue. Especially since he has a pretty large vocabulary and can say those words just fine.
