Would you take a job if your employer expected you to supply your own equipment / tools to do their work at a significant financial cost to you personally?

My fiancé works in an engineering job. His employer expects and “requires” the employees to supply their own toolboxes filled will equipment at a cost of £800 and they’re all only paid a little over minimum wage....

I couldn’t believe my ears when he told me this I think that’s a disgrace. I would understand it if the business supplied the employees with what they need to complete work and if they break it etc they should replace it. But this concept to me is madness.

Funny enough they can’t find anyone to work for them or stay there
