What age did your toddler start talking?

I’ve heard so many stories that girls speak and learn faster then the boys. My son is now in speech therapy at 2 yrs old. My son understands everything and pays attention, he just doesn’t want to talk lol. Could anyone give some advice when your son or daughter started talking? What else can I do to encourage him?

Before one my daughter was saying words with intent, and she speaks very well now.  My biggest tip is to talk to them all of the time- no baby talk from anyone- and talk about everything, in long sentence. People looked at me funny when I was talking to my sixth month old about dinner plans or whatever while out and about, but it works.

My daughter said maybe 5 or 6 words until like 21 months. She knew what everything was...like all her colors, shapes, books by name, animals, listened to directions, ect. She just didn't wanna say much. At like 22 months it just clicked and in the last 2 weeks she has added probably 20 words. Our doctor wasn't worried as she was progressing just not a vocally as some. She also said a lot of kids seem to be talking later this year and the ped docs think the pandemic might be a reason. Kids aren't in as many playgroups, library story times, with family/kids their own age as much, everyone is in masks so they can't see other people's mouths move besides immediate family. Just makes it harder. I believe it for my child as we did library storytime twice a week pre-covid. She was so close to spouting out words in march when she was around all the other kids and adults and stuff. The further into covid we went the less she cared. It is probably hard when she only saw a few adults and everyone mouths are hidden most of the time..can't watch how words look or how people talk. I am sure every kid isn't the same but having to cut those play times set her back. We added lots of reading and more word games. Songs and stuff. One day it clicked thankfully. Hopefully your little one has it click...reading and games. That's all I can suggest. Some kids do just talk later too. Good luck:)

I have 2 children. A 6 year old and a 2 year old. My 6 year old was speaking clearly at 18 months. My 2 year old still doesn’t talk. We’ve had her in speech therapy for about 7 months now, with very slow progress. That have switched her diagnosis to Apraxia. Look that up and see if it fits. It changed how her therapy is structured. She’s at a 1 year old speech level. And I talked to her all day every day, no baby talk.

My son was speaking sentences by 2. He is now almost 3 and will have a full conversation with people (including his doctors and asks lots of questions). I am now pregnant and wondering how this one will be 💖

My daughter started speaking about 4 word sentences at 18 months and knew most words. I’ve heard boys take longer as well so I’m curious to see how my son will be. So far my son is physically growing quicker than my daughter but I’ve noticed he doesn’t babble as much as she did

My son is 2 and says a few words but not talking. They get their on their own time, I’m not worried. I have been talking to my son no baby talk like the other moms say they did to their talking children and I am a SAHM who reads to him so much and he understands but won’t talk. Point is, I have been doing everything the “right” way and he still isn’t talking talking yet. His ped isn’t concerned and yes, he also said boys talk later than girls. My husband is the youngest of 4 and he didn’t talk until he was 3 and he is a litigator now. They get their on their own, and speech therapy will help so much. I’m hoping to get my son therapy but he may not qualify 🤷🏼‍♀️

Our son didn’t say much until around age 2. At 18 months he had maybe 4 words and signed. Now at 2.5, he never stops talking.

My son had been really speaking since about 16-17 months.  Before that there were several words but he still preferred to babble and speak in his own made up kind of language.  Anyway, now he is 2(26 months) and talks all of the time.  Seems to understand everything and repeats words.  But he is still hard to understand but is getting better on pronunciations.  If he says something, I will repeat it for him correctly and he repeats.  I have been talking to him since he was born.  Just talk all of the time.  Tell him what you are doing, talk through everything, read books.  Encourage him to say words that you know he knows so he can start developing the habit.

They tried to get us to do speech therepy at 2 with my son.  But through the process of having him evaluated he was making the desired advancements.  
In the past 5mo he has progressed with leaps and bounds.  
I use books and constructive toys to teach him words and just repeat things alllllll the time.  Like every time he cried for drink I would tell him dont cry just say more and you can have it.  And over time he learned that more would get him his drink faster bc I could understand what he was wanting.  
It's hard but has def advanced
