Posting pics of your kids on social media

Curious how others feel about this. My husband and I will not be sharing photos of our kids on social media because I don't feel right about giving my kid a social media presence without their consent, but I often see others posting photos of their kids on facebook, instagram, glow, etc. Harmless sharing? Or is this inappropriate and unfair to the child?
