Retailers Locking Up Family Planning Supplies

Ke

Hey CC! Slightly controversial topic for y’all. I went to Walmart and purchased 4 Equate pregnancy tests. They’re 88 cents each. They’re locked in glass cabinets along with ovulation tests, Plan B, and condoms. I had to press a button to call an associate to unlock the cabinet. It took her a good 5 minutes to get there so I was just standing in front of everything, waiting. She then asked if I wanted them at register 3 or an open self checkout. She walked them to self checkout and gave them to a male associate who then SET THEM DOWN at an older man’s register so he could help him while I waited for another register to open.

I’m 28 years old with two kids so I honestly don’t give a shit what people think of me buying four cheap pregnancy tests, but it got me thinking how embarrassing and discouraging this *could* be for younger people. Maybe also those who want to buy condoms or need pregnancy tests for an unexpected pregnancy.

I understand it’s to prevent theft, but I think they’re going overboard with it. I think they need to make the process more efficient and more discreet. Maybe they can checkout at the pharmacy rather than the main checkout? I honestly think it’s discouraging to those who would like to buy condoms, Plan B, and/or ovulation and pregnancy tests and it could potentially lead to more unprotected sex resulting in unwanted pregnancies and/or STDs, but I could be wrong.

What do y’all think? Am I overthinking it or did they go overboard?

Thanks!
