Without googling, when you hear someone is a social worker, what is it that you assume they do?

Like in your mind, what do social workers do?

Someone working with placing kids in the adoption and foster care system.

Support people and families with the assistance to gain access to government programs, food, housing, medical care, childcare, employment, etc.  That’s what I think regarding what they do... but the first thing I think of when someone says they are a social worker, I think they are over-worked, under-appreciated and under-paid.  Depending on their location and specific department, I also think they can be exposed to some very traumatizing situations.

My sister is a social worker and she currently works at a homeless shelter where she helps people find jobs and permanent housing. She is also part of a team that helps opioid addicts through recovery.
My cousin is a social worker at a hospital and she helps patients find nursing homes, other types of housing, helps them apply for financial help, and provides emotional support for patients and their families.
My other sister’s therapist is a social worker.
My mom talks about the social worker at her elementary school who provides therapy for students and helps families get in touch with other resources for things they need.

To me it depends. Social workers can do a lot of things. It is a pretty broad term that covers a lot if peoples jobs. Anything from helping individuals, kids, communities, groups, families, ect. Basically help people cope, function, and advance their lives in whatever specialty they are in. Could be helping people battle substance abuse to helping families in financial/life issues to helping battered women. They can help people dealing with medical trauma or people who have been abused. To me is a lot of things that the result should be helping people or society

Mental health facilities is my first thought. Second would be helping manage homeless shelters and any safe spaces like that. CPS as well.
